All You Need To Know About German Cockroaches and Roach Control

German Cockroaches are the most common type of cockroach found in the Oklahoma City area. They are brown in color and about ½ inch long when fully developed. These unwanted creatures boast a very distinctive characteristic. Adult German Cockroaches usually have two parallel lines that run behind their heads. The complete life cycle of a German Cockroach is 100-200 days for females and each female develops 4-8 of those ever-so-familiar capsules, each containing 30-48 eggs. That means that each female cockroach can reproduce 130-384 OTHER COCKROACHES in its lifetime. If you don’t already have the heeby jeebys, you must have thick skin!

Why Are Roaches Invading My Home?

Roaches are like most other living entities … food and shelter are their main priorities. German Cockroaches may enter your home because they are looking for shelter from the hot Oklahoma sun, or they are looking for a dry place due to rain. Roaches may also enter your home on their search for food. Since cockroaches are so small, they can enter through cracks and crevices, doors, and windows. Once inside your home, these pesky bugs will start hunting for food. If you have cockroaches invading your home, you may consider taking a moment to evaluate how clean your home is. Roaches thrive in dark, unsanitary environments. Old food that has fallen behind the stove, hidden bread crumbs, etc. is the perfect meal for a cockroach, and they WILL find it. Roaches also really like dirty dishes, so you may see an influx of roaches if you let the dishes pile up. All in all, the cleaner your house is, the less likely you are to have a cockroach infestation but a clean house doesn’t always do the trick.

Are There Health Risks In Seeing A Cockroach or Two In My Home?

Cockroaches live in groups and reproduce fairly quickly. If you see one or two around your house, there’s likely many more. We all know that roaches are nasty little buggers, but do they really pose a health threat? YES! Cockroaches can trigger allergies and asthma. Their saliva, feces, and shedding body parts do not provide a healthy environment for you and your family. Typical allergy cockroach symptoms include coughing, nasal congestion, skin rash, wheezing, ear infection, and sinus infection. Cockroaches can also carry bacteria that if deposited on food can cause salmonella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus. Whether you see one cockroach or a whole group, there are more hiding and they could be causing sickness in your home.

How Do You Get Rid of German Cockroaches?

You probably knew that cockroaches were gross, but now you know how quickly they produce, the harm they can cause, and that there’s never just one cockroach in your home. If you’ve recently seen a cockroach on the loose, it’s time to take action! Effective roach control starts with sanitation. Keeping a clean home and closing doors and windows will help prevent roach infestation, but you likely need more protection than that. Priority Pest & Mosquito Solutions specializes in roach control and cockroach cleanouts. With our pet-friendly spray, roaches will be stopped in their tracks before entering your home.
